Call to limit intakes to public health programmes | Bangkok Post: news


A surplus of graduate public health academics and community health officers is likely over the next decade, according to a recent study, pointing to the need to stop increasing enrolments in these programmes. He was speaking at a recent meeting of the committee's sub-committee on health personnel planning. The projected fall in demand parallels a likely decline in the role played by tambon health promotion hospitals, said Dr Mongkol. Despite the expected drop, over 90 educational outlets offering programmes in public health are producing about 26,000 graduates with degrees in public health every year, he said. This means there will be around 267,000 public health academics and officers in the next 10 years while at most, 30,000 of these professionals will be needed, he said.
